Teeth Whitening Facts

Teeth Whitening

The usual reasons for teeth discoloration are food, coffee, tea, wine, soft drinks and smoking. However, the methods for whitening teeth have improved tremendously over the last few years. Millions of people whiten their teeth every year; the majority do so in order to feel more self-confident - a beautiful, sparkling white smile gives an excellent first impression.

How important is a white smile?

  • 94% say a smile is what they notice first
  • 87% say an attractive smile is important to their self esteem
  • 75% say a nicer smile is important in landing their dream job
  • 84% say an attractive smile is important for meeting someone

The study was conducted on a representative sample of 1000 United Kingdom adults (both men and women) between 18 and 50 years of age. The poll was the first national survey of its kind and explored the importance of smiles in relation to business and careers, dating and marriage, the social arena, and the overall value of smiles and self-esteem.

How can teeth be whitened?

Professional Teeth Whitening System
GlistenWHITE GEL-XTM, which is identical to that used by dentists, gently and effectively removes discoloration and whitens your teeth. As the active ingredient in the gel (carbamide peroxide) breaks down, oxygen works on the discoloured organic deposits, making the teeth white. While the remineralizing gel contains calcium carbonate which is a naturally occurring substance in the tooth structure. Through whitening and general aging of teeth small pits or microscopic holes develop in the enamel which can lead to tooth decay and sensitivity, these holes lead directly to the tooth nerve. Using a remineralizing gel during the whitening process fills these cavities, reduces sensitivity and improves the general health of your teeth. Accumulated clinical data on carbamide peroxide continues to support both the safety and the effectiveness of this kind of tooth whitening.

Whitening toothpaste
Cheap (£1-£6) - Whitening toothpastes (dentifrices) are completely ineffective for whitening your teeth. They clean your teeth by simple abrasion, hence there is no chemical reaction taking place to whiten your teeth. The toothpaste helps to keep your teeth lighter as it helps to prevent stains becoming too deep. However, the toothpaste will not change the shade of your teeth.

Dental whitening
Expensive (£220-£430) - This process involves the dentist producing two mouth trays and giving you a carbamide peroxide gel to use at home. Our teeth whitening process works in exactly the same way except you shape the mouth trays yourself.

Laser whitening
Expensive (£430-£720) - This method is usually done in a couple of hours at the dentists.

Whitening strips
Cheap - Strips coated with a low percentage whitening gel. The strips only cover some parts of the front teeth, and do not remove stains between the teeth. Uneven and patchy results are common.
